Hammer365: 177/188 Giant Arrow Head

Img_0339

Kansas City loves their Chiefs that's for sure. I had just climbed back into my truck at the grocery today when this gentleman appeared out of nowhere at my driver's window wanting to talk. Well, he was a lot older than me and both of his hands were busy holding this gigantic arrow head shaped stone so I rolled my window down. He began telling me where he found it and where he'd been with it this day. He was talking to me as if we just picked back up on a previous conversation. He'd been down to the police station with it showing it off and said it set off the metal detector as he pointed to those larger wholes near the bottom.  "There's iron in there," he told me. I stepped back out of the truck and he let me hold it, it was quite heavy. At this point I was feeling like a sales pitch would be coming on but he just continued admiring his stone and talking. And then the more he talked the more I disappointed I was that he wouldn't be selling it to me. He said he had another one at home that was about 250 pounds.

We spoke for a good 15 minutes about nothing but this rock he was carrying. I thanked him for sharing with me and wished him a "blessed day." I don't do that often, wish a blessed day. I watched as he walked two isles over to his car where he popped the trunk and placed the stone. He closed the lid and headed into the store.

I don't know why he picked me out in that parking lot where there were many other people he could have shared his show and tell with. Was he just waiting there for me the whole time? Had he shown it to anyone else? I don't know but I do know that it felt good to spend a few minutes with a complete stranger as he shared with me what appeared to be his proudest possession.

Hammer365: 175/190 Sprint Center Glass

Dropped The RedHead off at the Sprint Center to catch Buble'. Yeah, I'm the big fan but for some reason she gets to go with her sister while I sit here listening to him on my iPod.

Hammer365: 080/285 2107 Grand Avenue

Img_0173

My favorite building in the entire city is at 2107 Grand Avenue, Kansas City, MO. I began my career in management with Western Auto Supply Company back in 1991 in Huntsville, AL.  My goal was to move up the corporate ladder and to eventually land a position that would get me a panoramic corner office in this great building. I was finally offered a position in Kansas City in 1999, shortly after Sears had sold the company to Advance Auto Parts.  Advance, who already had a well established home office out in Roanoke, VA decided to close down the WASCO building and sell off the assets.  That's just the way things go sometimes. I accepted the position and moved from Orlando, as it got me closer to my daughter who was living in Springfield, MO at the time.

I was also introduced to my Soulmate by my travel agent at about the same time and I have received blessing after blessing since making this area my home.  Of all the places I have lived, KC ranks up there. If we were 30 minutes from the ocean and it never snowed, it would be closer to the top.

Oddly, I have probably spent less than 10 hours in this building and the adjacent extension. I remember the narrow hallways, the tiny outdated elevator, the somewhat spiral stairway, and the vintage pictures outlining the history of a company that was a landmark in rural Americana. Founded by George Pepperdine, the company grew to over 4,200 company owned and "dealer" stores and pioneered franchise operations.  Today, the building has been converted to Western Auto Lofts and the sign remains and is illuminated nightly.

Hammer365: 078/287 City of Fountains

(download)

Known as The City of Fountains, Kansas City has over 200 registered fountains in the metro area alone.  I guess you've got to be known for something.  This one here is down at Crown Center and is a lot of fun during the Summer months. I love taking the boy down for a run through.

Hammer365: 077/288 Downtown Kansas City

(download)

This is one of my favorite views of the city. Taken from The Link between Union Station and Crown Center just over Main Street.  I think I could stand there for hours but then I think I would get tired of standing and there are no benches in The Link so I would probably leave and go look at something else.

Hammer365: 075/290 Lunch at Crayola

Well, we didn't have lunch here but these small people did. I'm not sure I would want to. I'm not very fond of the flavor of crayola and I heard the beans are waxy.

Ben calls Kansas City's Union Station, Minion Station.  It's kinda funny actually. This shot taken from the top of the hill at The Liberty Memorial. I love going down to this part of town, there's just so much history here.

Hammer365: 051/313 Rees' Putto 2x2x4

Img_0113

I went downtown for the Home Show today. Did you know there's not enough parking for events in Kansas City? It's actually pretty sad and quite inconvenient. Anyhow, I finally found a garage to get in to and since I drive a big beast they had me park on the roof.  As I exited the stairwell  this big hunk of steel was staring down at me. At least I think it was staring. It had no eye that I could see.

This is a sculpture by Kansas Citian Michael Rees.
