Hammer 365

365 consecutive days, at least 365 shots, just 1 camera, my iPhone.

One of the things Kansas Citians are really proud of is our plush green grass. There's none like it anywhere.

Hammer365: 159/206 Next Magic Trick

Img_0319

I've got to figure out how to get about 15 pounds off. Well, I know how, what I meant to say is I need to make a commitment to get rid of it.

App: iQuikSplash then BestCamera with Candy and Vignette filters.

Hammer365: 106/259 Beautiful Red Tulips

(download)

I think tulips are the most beautiful flower. I love that there are so many colors but red is my favorite. I remember when I was in Mrs. Price's fifth grade class at Nan Grey Davis Elementary in Theodore, AL we had a field trip to the State Capital in Montgomery for our Alabama History lesson. The grounds were covered with vibrant red tulips and I remember my Mom sending me with her 110 Kodak Star camera. This is my first memory of snapping shots. I still have those little square pictures with the rounded corners. Even at that age and being my first time without parental supervision I got a little creative and took a panorama of the capital and the tulip spread by shooting several shots moving slightly to the right each time. I was so happy and proud when we had the roll developed at K&B Drug Store and I was able to piece the shots together.

Maybe red tulips are my favorite because they bloom in early spring, maybe because of the impression they made on me on that big field trip away from home, maybe they were crimson and not red (Roll Tide Roll), maybe because they were my first subject matter as a photographer.

Thank goodness for the iPhone.

Hammer365: 090/275 Escape the Ward

It wasn't actually a psycho ward of course.  I took the kids down to KU Medical Center to see my mother-in-law [at work].

Hammer365: 081/284 Oh, Lady Liberty

Img_0174

Perhaps the most entertaining street corner on all of Johnson County, KS lies at the intersection of S Mur-Len Road and W 135th Street.

  • At least 365 days a year this street corner is the operational showroom for the Little Ceasars dude right there on the SW corner, strumming his pizza guitar.  Want to know a secret?  There two are of them! Yep, they are twin brothers and they alternate working the street corner for the sad little pizza pizza company.  I know this because I ran into them at Pizza Street (a competitor). Both chowed for 35 minutes straight without even breathing and only grumbling and mumbling as crumbs dropped from their mouths.
  • 3 months out of the year on the SE corner one of the previously mentioned Caesar brothers dons the big Incredible Hulk gloves and a green money hat to sandwich board for a business going out of business back over behind Buffalo Wild Wings.  I often wonder how long it will be before they shut down.  And will they employ the Caesar brothers to push 25%, 50%, 75% off chicken legs, last chance?
  • Up on the N side of the NW corner is where I found the subject of today's Hammer365.  These lady Liberties are in every town, proudly waving at passers by. These two cats have soul and rhythm and at least keep themselves entertained for the duration of their shifts. It's like watching someone on crack, I think.
  • Just 100 feet away on the South side of the NW corner (man this is getting confusing) is a big fluffy dog with his tongue hanging out working for the pet shop there. He dances a little but is in the shadow of the dancing ladies.
  • Now there's a new King in town - just a block west is the Cash for Gold dude, sporting a Kings robe, staff, blue blockers and 44 oz Super Big Gulp. He also has a real boom box setting atop his late 70's model disco conversion van to keep his King's groove going.

There is work out there. You just have to want to work.
